Fifty years ago this month, the big movie release wasn't a Marvel superhero or a Star Wars retread. It was a very simple story about a baby being possessed by Satin. And it was fabulous.
I ultimately didn't see the big June 1968 release until I was in college. I could totally understand why everybody had been talking about it back in the day. These days, you get those movies that command peoples' attentions. But how many of them make memories that last with you for half a century. You know the monthly drill, folks. I'll scan the entertainment pages of the LA Times to give you my knee jerk reaction to what's out there.
Will any of them be around fifty years from now? The devil if I know.
Won't You Be My Neighborhood?: A documentary about the legendary Mister Rogers. For every nine people who found him charming, there's one out of ten who found him downright creepy.
Book Club: Reviewed here recently. A pleasant surprise.
Ocean's 8: An all chick version of the old heist movie. The real robbery is people having to pay to see this uninspired junk.
RBG: A documentary about the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Wait! She's still alive???
First Reformed: A dying church and aren't they all?
The Gospel According to Andre: Unless this is about former Dodger Ethier, I ain't interested.
Nancy: Wait for the sequel...Sluggo.
American Animals: Students plot to steal books from a library. Pure fantasy.
Deadpool 2: Only after I've seen Deadpool 1.
Heats Beat Loud: Hoping to stay connected through their shared musical passions, Dad urges Daughter to turn their weekly jam sessions into a father-daughter live act. Kind of a Partridge Family-ish to me.
Hereditary: A family uncovers some dark secrets about their ancestry. There goes my 23andMe subscription.
Solo - A Star Wars Story: Blog review ran earlier this week. I liked it, but most geeks think this is the first Star Wars franchise malfunction.
On Chesil Beach: Saoirse Ronan stars as a....oh, for fuck's sake, not again.
Superfly: 70's crap becomes 2018 first run fodder.
The Year of Spectacular Men: Trust me. This is not a documentary about Harvey Weinstein or Kevin Spacey.
Affairs of State: Intrigue in Washington, DC. Can it be as interesting as the real thing?
Tag: Five friends reunite as adults to play a childhood game. You're it.
Set It Up: Corporate romances. Strictly for Human Resources professionals.
Incredibles 2: I thought the first one stunk. Oh, and by the way, it was nice to know you, John Lasseter.
Gotti: Starring John Travolta. That's all I need to write.
The Yellow Birds: Tragedy strikes a platoon during the Iraq War. This stars Jennifer Aniston and I have no idea how that works.
Believer: A documentary on the LGBTQ community within the Mormon church. So which one of the Osmonds is gay?
Billy Boy: A young man tries to move on after his girlfriend's death. Starring Blake Jenner and Melissa Benoist, who just got divorced in real life. That might be the better movie.
A Kid Like Jake: Jim Parsons and Claire Danes worry about their kid's gender choice. Two actors I really like in a dismal plot line.
Rodin: The painter, not the thing that terrorized Japan.
Dinner last night: BBQ Pork in garlic sauce at Bamboo Cuisine.
