How wonderfully small town and simple this looks. An elderly gentleman casually wheels his bike down a New York City street.
It ain't.
This old codger is probably the only one in the borough of Manhattan who is obeying traffic rules. The rest are not. And there is tons of encouragement for others to do the same.
The biggest issue with all these bikes motoring around NY is the simple fact that they are there. With the influx of bicycles in hopes of replacing the dreaded automobile, traffic patterns have been altered. Broadway used to be six lanes wide. We have lost one to a pedestrian walkway. We have lost another to the restaurant that has now extended its outdoor dining to a shed where previously cars could park.
And the third lane that is now toast is the one dedicated to bike riders.
The problem with this is that very bike lane is usually the one you need to cross in order to get to the outdoor dining shed.
Uh oh.
I saw this first hand last week when I ate on the Upper West Side. And watched one waiter after another lose his footing due to a bicyclist speeding through. One that did not stop at the nearby red light either. Causing several cars to slam on the breaks.
But, boy oh boy, bikes sure do help the ecology.
Morons.
Dinner last night: The pre-game buffet at the Dodger Stadium Club.
