These days, the only movies that really intrigue me are biographical documentaries, particularly show biz folks. You hope to learn a bit about their lives and maybe there's some gossipy tidbits you never knew. A little salaciousness goes a long way.
But this new documentary has not of that. It's all about John Candy, an actor and a human being taken away at the age of 43. This film by Tom Hanks' son Colin has nothing sleazy about it. From all accounts, Candy was a great guy. A wonderful performer. A husband. A father. A friend. And, with all the talking heads from family to SCTV to Steve Martin and Martin Short, that's all you get.
Odd how a normal life can be so compelling to watch and learn about. Indeed, his only issues in his short life was that he smoked and had a weight problem. Other than that, this was a guy you would have been proud to know.
I know it sounds boring. But this Amazon documentary is really a fascinating look at a very nice guy.
We still miss you, John.
