This Date in History - February 13

Happy birthday, Kim Novak.  Yes, ma'am.

1322:  THE CENTRAL TOWER OF ELY CATHEDRAL FALLS ON THE NIGHT OF 12TH-13TH.

I guess the song was about "Winchester Cathedral" because the word "Ely" doesn't fit the lyric perfectly.

1322:  THE GENERATIO PERCAL IS THE FIRST TIME MENTIONED IN A DOCUMENT.

And this is important why?  Anybody?

1503:  IN THE DISFIDA DI BARLETTA, THE FAMOUS CHALLENGE BETWEEN 13 ITALIAN AND 13 FRENCH KNIGHTS NEAR BARLETTA.

The very first season of "Survivor."

1542:  CATHERINE HOWARD, THE FIFTH WIFE OF HENRY VIII OF ENGLAND, IS EXECUTED FOR ADULTERY.

If this was a murderous offense, there would not have been enough bullets for Zsa Zsa Gabor.

1575:  HENRY III OF FRANCE IS CROWNED AT RHEIMS, MARRYING LOUISE DE LORRAINE-VAUDEMONT ON THE SAME DAY.

Stupid move.  It allowed people to combine wedding and coronation presents.

1633:  GALILEO GALILEI ARRIVES IN ROME FOR HIS TRIAL BEFORE THE INQUISITION.

The very first episode of "Judge Judy."

1689:  WILLIAM AND MARY ARE PROCLAIMED CO-RULERS OF ENGLAND.

And the college began when?

1880:  THOMAS EDISON OBSERVES THE EDISON EFFECT.

What the heck is that?  Just ask Mrs. Edison.

1885:  FIRST LADY BESS TRUMAN IS BORN.

Because somebody needed to be stuck married to Harry.

1894:  AUGUSTE AND LOUIS LUMIERE PATENT THE CINEMATOGRAPHE, A COMBINATION MOVIE CAMERA AND PROJECTOR.

As seen in the movie "Hugo."

1914:  ASCAP, THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF COMPOSERS, AUTHORS, AND PUBLISHERS IS ESTABLISHED TO PROTECT THE COPYRIGHTS OF MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS.

Not to be confused with ASPCA, which protects the musical works created by dogs and cats.

1919:  TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD IS BORN.

Now wait a cotton pickin' minute.

1920:  THE NEGRO NATIONAL LEAGUE IS FORMED.

Line?

1923:  PILOT CHUCK YAEGER IS BORN.

He did have the right stuff.  Just ask Mrs. Yaeger.

1931:  NEW DELHI BECOMES THE CAPITAL OF INDIA.

To celebrate, there are no telemarketing calls anywhere from 6PM to 9PM.

1933:  ACTRESS KIM NOVAK IS BORN.

The only person celebrating a birthday today that I actually met.

1935:  A NEW JERSEY JURY FINDS BRUNO HAUPTMANN GUILTY OF THE 1932 KIDNAPPING AND MURDER OF THE LINDBERGH BABY.

Who's got the extension cord?

1942:  ACTRESS CAROL LYNLEY IS BORN.

Just saw her at a "Poseidon Adventure" reunion.  Boy, she got heavy.  I'm hoping that the excess weight is due to water retention.

1942:  MONKEE PETER TORK IS BORN.

Hey, hey, he's a Monkee.

1955:  ISRAEL OBTAINS 4 OF THE 7 DEAD SEA SCROLLS.

What?  You couldn't spring for the complete set??

1960:  BLACK COLLEGE STUDENTS STAGE THE FIRST OF THE NASHVILLE SIT-INS AT THREE LUNCH COUNTERS.

How come they never hold these at a book store?

1970:  THE VERY FIRST HEAVY METAL ALBUM, "BLACK SABBATH" IS RELEASED.

The sale of cotton balls and earplugs skyrockets.

1971:  BACKED BY AMERICAN AIR AND ARTILLERY SUPPORT, SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS INVADE LAOS.

Is there ever a day from 1965 to 1974 where there is not a news item about Vietname?

1980:  ACTOR DAVID JANSSEN DIES.

You can stop running now.

1984:  KONSTANTIN CHERNENKO SUCCEEDS THE LATE YURI ANDROPOV AS GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF THE SOVIET UNION.

Because Yuri had dropped off.

1996:  ACTOR MARTIN BALSAM DIES.

Watch that staircase in the Bates Motel.

2000:  THE LAST ORIGINAL "PEANUTS" COMIC STRIP APPEARS IN NEWSPAPERS ONE DAY AFTER CHARLES M. SCHULZ DIES.

Which means that will be a news item whenever I do February 12 as this Date in History.

2002:  COUNTRY MUSICIAN WAYLON JENNINGS DIES.

Is this the guy with the puppet Madame?  Or am I confused?

2005:  BASEBALL PITCHER NELSON BRILES DIES.

The only person to die on this date that I actually once interviewed.

2005:  BOWLER DICK WEBER DIES.

Gutter ball.

Dinner last night:  Pork chop with mushroom sauce, corn on the cob, roast potatoes, and broccoli at good friend Barbara's home.
